For years, hams have had to hunt through scattered forums, half-updated PDFs, obscure vendor websites, endless YouTube rabbit holes, and old blog posts just to understand the basics of ham radio digital voice, including DMR, D-STAR, Yaesu Fusion, P25, NXDN, M17, FreeDV… the list keeps growing.
If you’re new to digital modes, it can feel overwhelming.
If you’re experienced, it’s still fragmented.
And if you’re curious, it’s hard to know where to even begin.
So I built EvoHam to fix that.
A Modern, Clean, Beginner-Friendly Home for Ham Radio Digital Voice
EvoHam exists for one reason – to simplify digital voice for every ham. No frustration, no gatekeeping, no scavenger hunt required.
Digital voice shouldn’t require:
- Decoding conflicting advice across forums
- Navigating outdated tutorials
- Guessing which radio to buy
- Building codeplugs from scratch without guidance
- Or bouncing between 12 different websites to find reliable information
It should be clear, approachable, and enjoyable.
My Journey With Digital Voice
My interest in digital voice started more than a decade ago – long before DMR became mainstream in the amateur world.
Back in 2012, when DMR repeaters were nearly unheard of in Canada, I was one of the early adopters helping bring this technology into the amateur community. Through my previous site, VA3XPR, I documented the early growth of DMR, covered new hardware releases, reviewed radios that were just entering the ham market, and helped countless operators get started with this new digital mode.
Those early days required:
- Experimenting with new repeaters
- Testing commercial radios adapted for amateur use
- Helping organize some of the first Canadian DMR resources
- Bridging knowledge from public safety/commercial systems into ham radio
I saw firsthand both the excitement and the confusion digital voice created.
And over the years, I’ve spent countless hours explaining, teaching, testing, reviewing, and simplifying this technology for hams across Canada and around the world.
EvoHam is the evolution of that work – a modern home built on years of experience.
