FreeDV 2.1.0 Release Adds SmartSDR Support

A look at what’s new in FreeDV 2.1.0, including early SmartSDR integration for FlexRadio users.

FreeDV 2.1.0 is now available, bringing a fresh lineup of bug fixes, performance improvements, and – most exciting of all, experimental SmartSDR integration for FlexRadio’s 6000, 8000, and Aurora series HF radios. This marks one of the most promising steps yet toward seamless digital voice operation on high-end Flex systems.

If you’ve been curious about where FreeDV is heading in 2026, this release shows serious momentum.

What’s New in FreeDV 2.1.0

Bug Fixes & Stability Enhancements

This release includes several under-the-hood improvements that make FreeDV more stable and reliable across platforms, especially during long QSOs and when switching modes.

Experimental SmartSDR Support

The big headline:
FreeDV can now interface with SmartSDR on supported FlexRadio models.

Supported radios (experimental):

  • Flex 6000 series
  • Flex 8000 series
  • Flex Aurora series

SmartSDR integration is still in active development, but early testers can now connect FreeDV through new AppImage builds specifically optimized for FlexRadio workflows.

This is huge – Flex operators have been asking for native FreeDV capability for years, and this opens the door for more polished integration in future releases.

What Is FreeDV?

FreeDV is an open-source digital voice mode designed for HF that combines efficient digital modulation with a low bit-rate speech codec to deliver clear voice audio under challenging band conditions. Unlike traditional SSB, FreeDV transmits digitally using modes such as 700C, 700D, and 2020, allowing operators to maintain intelligible QSOs even when the noise floor rises or propagation weakens.

Developed by a global community of amateur radio operators and digital-signal-processing experts, FreeDV runs on Windows, macOS, Linux, and low-power devices like the Raspberry Pi. It interfaces with any radio capable of SSB, making it one of the most accessible digital voice technologies in amateur radio today.

To learn more about how FreeDV works, including setup, mode selection, and operating tips, see the FreeDV for Beginners guide.

Download FreeDV 2.1.0

FreeDV 2.1.0 is now available for download for all major platforms:

  • Windows
  • Linux AppImage (Intel/AMD)
  • Linux AppImage (ARM systems – e.g., Raspberry Pi 5+)
  • Linux AppImage with SmartSDR support (Raspberry Pi 4+)
  • macOS

For full details, changelogs, and additional download assets, visit the official GitHub release page.

Why This Matters for Digital Voice Hams

FlexRadio owners have traditionally needed extra routing workarounds to use FreeDV.
FreeDV 2.1.0 takes a big step toward making open-source digital voice fully accessible to Flex users – potentially increasing adoption of FreeDV across HF.

This is one of the most important FreeDV updates in years, and we’ll continue tracking progress as Flex support matures.
